About Stockings Manufacturing

A narrow calf that leads down to a well-turned ankle has something that men find difficult to ignore. When the same leg is covered in a sheer stocking, ignoring it becomes practically impossible!
Women's hosiery as we know it today -- whether the tantalizing Cuban heel seamed stockings that's carefully rolled on for those special evenings or the practical pantyhose worn to the office -- are a far cry from the coarse, hand-knitted wool stockings worn by the peasants of the 17th century.
Not only have the machines invented as far back as the 16th century been improved upon, a variety of style changes have also been made to women's hosiery during the past half century.
A 1950s invention marked a temporary disappearance of seamed stockings, and the short skirts of the 1960s led to the invention of pantyhose -- passion killers as far as male stocking enthusiasts were concerned.
Modern women seem to have settled on a mixture of the practical with the aesthetically pleasing, with a greater selection of pantyhose being available for day-to-day wear along with a welcome renaissance for seamed stockings. Modern hosiery manufacturing has to accommodate the high wholesale demand for quality goods. From the finest 7 denier sheer stockings, through multi-colored and wildly patterned hose and onwards to practical 60 denier pantyhose, women want the best.
Modern stockings and pantyhose are produced on circular machines that eliminate the need for back seams by knitting tubes that are then 'set' to the shape of the leg. While the first circular machines produced sheer stockings with a reinforced heel pocket, modern machines have eliminated this, offering a better fit regardless of the wearer's shoe size.
The addition of lycra to the stocking yarn is possibly the biggest break-through in hosiery manufacturing; the result being stockings and pantyhose that combine elasticity with the ability to cling perfectly to the leg.
Unfortunately, the addition of lycra to women's hosiery has one draw-back.
"While lycra's great," says Janine Burke, a beauty consultant and regular customer at StockingShopping.com, "I really miss that sheer stocking effect you get with old-fashioned style stockings." A sentiment shared by many a true stocking connoisseur.
Seamed stockings, having made a huge come-back in recent years, are still available but are manufactured using a different method -- one that was used before the invention of the circular machine.
Following the original hosiery manufacturing techniques of the 30s - 50s, flat knitting is used. After the fabric has been produced, each stocking is individually seamed. The top of the seam has a 'finishing loop', a small hole that every seamed stocking has as a result of the machinist turning the welt -- the stocking top -- inside out, in order to finish off.
Once sewn, the stockings are 'boarded'. This is a process where each stocking is stretched over a flat metal leg form and 'set' with steam. The knit tightens, creases are eliminated and the leg is correctly shaped.
Because the process is time consuming, seamed stockings are never cheap. Couple this with the fact that around a third of production -- especially during the production of sheer stockings -- is discarded during quality control and you'll understand why.
While the women's hosiery manufacturing process will undoubtedly continue to evolve, there will always be a demand for the sheer stockings of bygone days that are equally as loved by the women who wear them as the men who appreciate the sight of a 'bit of stocking top'.
Hosiery manufacturing has come a long way -- wear your stockings with pride!

Now also lingerie

We realized that even though we have based our shop on stockings, there might be a need for basic lingerie. Of course we always have offered garter belts, but customers have asked for bras and pretty, simple two piece sets to go with the stockings.
Why not? Well the downside is that it will require a lot more space, and we will have more funds tied up in our warehouse. Remember that most of our stockings comes in regular or queen size and up to 10 colors each. So 2 sizes time 10 colors will be 20 item numbers. However a bra is size 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 44. Cup sizes A, B, C, D, ant typically 4 colors. Lets do the math: 7 sizes x 4 cup sizes x 4 colors= 112 item numbers for one bra only!!
And don't forget that the price per bra is about 3 times more than the price for a pair of stockings. So if the stockings retail price is $10 and the bra retail price is $30 then your retail warehouse value for 1 style of stockings is $200 and retail warehouse value for 1 bra style is $3360.
So is it worth it? I'm sure it is. I still see that most lingerie stores are selling products from www.shirleyofhollywood.com, and they do not stock any items. This means that when a customer is placing an order, the shop owner calls Shirley Of Hollywood and order the products. When the shop owner several days later gets his product from Shirley, then he ships to the customer. This is why you always need to check the shipping policy from online shops. If they don't advertise 1 or 2 business days shipping time, then it is usually because they are working from the model I just described.
It's cool to be an online shop and not worry about inventory, but hey.... what about the customer? You can be sure that they want their merchandise faster!
This is where www.stockingshopping.com has a strong side, and yes it is worth every penny invested in inventory.

The beginning

We started our retail stocking shop as a home based internet mail order company in 1999.
Our goal was to create a unique retail stocking outlet, only dealing with various kind of hosiery and the most related accessories.
We had contact with several suppliers and decided which ones we wanted to go with.
No fancy business plan here:) We could "feel" there was a need for our type of store.
We ordered probably around 20 different kind of hosiery. It doesnt sound like much, but some of the items was available in 10-15 colors and came in several different sizes, so it actually gave us around 300 item numbers in stock. Today we stock close to 1300 item numbers and it will be expanded within the next few month.
Our website got in place and after running it under a couple of different domain names, we decided to stay with
stockingshopping.com .
